Bec Poulsen, Ph.D.

Bec Poulsen is an academic research fellow, exploring how people experience auditory and sensory in everyday life, framed through neuroscientific lens. Their work focuses on the relationship between sensory environments and wellbeing, particularly in autistic and neurodivergent populations, with an emphasis on real-world impact, from sensory distress through to self-expression and joy.
Bec’s research bridges lived experience, participatory methods, and neuroscience, contributing to new models of sensory wellbeing and practical frameworks that can be integrated into everyday life.
Alongside their academic work, Bec is also a music producer and science-based sound designer, creating music, immersive soundscapes, and auditory tools grounded in principles of neurological and physiological science. Their creative practice draws on decades of experience in music production and a deep understanding of how sound interacts with the body and brain, positioning sound not just as art, but as a tool for regulation, connection, and transformation.
Bec is a research fellow investigating auditory and sensory experiences, with a current focus on neurodivergent and autistic people, spanning real-world experiences through to neruoscience.

Bec creates music and sound-based experiences, grounded in science-informed auditory design and intuitive creative practice. Their work integrates decades of experience as a music producer (BeXta) with their science-based sound design and music creation.
Bec contributes to community-led initiatives through governance and collaboration, with a focus on translating sensory science into accessible, real-world tools and resources.
